We begin our journey to the beautiful Eyre Peninsula today with a stop at Port Wakefield for morning tea before continuing on to Port Augusta for a lunch break. We then head west, following the Lincoln Highway to the town of Whyalla, one of South Australia’s best kept secrets. The town is renowned for its dramatic events, stunning coastal & outback scenery.
❱ 1 night: Alexander Motel
★ After a cooked breakfast, we tour to Iron Knob where the first iron ore deposit was discovered.
The town grew up between the two “sister” quarries and supplied Whyalla with ore for its steel & shipbuilding industry for many years. We stop for morning tea before departing Iron Knob and travelling in a westerly direction along an old dirt road through sheep station country passing to Mt Ive Station.
★ After a picnic lunch, here we take the station track to visit Lake Gairdner. This incredible salt lake is so large, it is visible from space!
We then travel down through old Buckleboo and take the Stringer Highway (another dirt track) to re-join the Eyre Highway before continuing west through Kyancutta and arriving in Wudinna, the gateway to the Gawler Ranges.
Indulge in a delicious dinner at your motel’s restaurant tonight.
❱ 1 night: Gawler Ranges Motel
After breakfast, we continue our tour travelling through the Gawler Ranges on our way to Ceduna on the South Australian coastline.
★ Explore the Gawler Ranges, an area that is virtually untouched since the beginning of time and one rarely visited by tourists due to the lack of accommodation & other facilities in its unspoilt wilderness.
Hidden in the ranges are amazing rock formations filled with colour. Stunning boulders of granite towering above plains often filled with colourful vegetation and seasonal wildflowers. Rare yellow footed rock wallabies can be seen hopping around enjoying their natural environment during our journey.
We travel to Streaky Bay situated on a picturesque section of the Eyre Peninsula. After a refreshment stop, we continue following the coast to the township of Elliston where we stop for lunch at the Elliston Hotel. After lunch, we continue to Port Lincoln for our stay.
This evening, dinner is served at the hotel restaurant.
❱ 2 nights: Port Lincoln Hotel
This morning after breakfast, we join our wonderful Seafood Bay Adventure Cruise.
We cruise the sheltered waters of Boston Bay through the canals of the Lincoln Cove Marina. The journey takes us to Port Lincoln National Park, Boston Island. Here you will enjoy the heart-warming sight of Sea Lions playing in the waters and also views of Port Lincoln that can only be seen from the ocean. During the cruise, we will enjoy seasonal seafood such as prawns, mussels, sashimi tuna & kingfish.
Later, we return to Port Lincoln township. In the afternoon, a tour to the unique Koppio Smithy Museum is another great highlight for you to enjoy. The Koppio Smithy Museum is operated by the National Trust and features the original Blacksmith shop and two bedroom cottage. The one teacher schoolhouse also features early Aboriginal Artifacts in addition to White Flat Post Office, reportedly the smallest in the State. An amazing collection of tractors and farm machinery once owned by the original Jericho family is also on display.
