Day 2 / Saturday 8 June: Kelpie Festival Casterton (BD)
This morning we begin an amazing day visiting one of the world’s most amazing dog festivals dedicated to the much-loved Kelpie Dog. Our tour takes us to Casterton, named after a Walled Roman town due to the Hill surrounding the area. The attractive township is well known due to the original Australian working dog, the Kelpie being breed here by Jack Gleeson. The Kelpies are prized by sheep farmers due to their round up skills and one recently sold for $27, 000 dollars! On arrival we find the town alive with activities, in a festival atmosphere with food stalls parades and activities. We enjoy the fun of the novelty events including the best dressed Kelpie and the dog most like its owner. Later an amazing test of endurance speed and stamina is conducted as the Kelpie dash high jump and hill climb in a highly prized event and the winner being awarded the King of the Kelpies. In another amazing event owners are asked to call their faithful Kelpie from the top of Blueberry Hill, the highest hill overlooking Casterton with the dogs answering their masters call and sprinting up the hillside to run through its owners’ personal gate. These amazing and expensive working dogs are treasured by farmers all over the world. Lunch food and drink is available from food stalls throughout the day. We return to Mt Gambier for dinner and overnight.
Day 3 / Sunday 9 June: Mount Gambier’s Highlights, Blue Lake Aquifer Tour, Sunken Garden & Glenelg River Cruise (BTD)
Today after breakfast we take a tour of Mount Gambier. We experience the Aquifer Tour at the Blue Lake. Learn all about this incredible phenomenon unique to Mount Gambier and enjoy spectacular views of the lake and town. Later we travel to the beautiful Umpherston Gardens to experience the delightful Sunken Garden situated within an extinct volcano. We tour to Port Macdonnell on the Shipwreck Coast and enjoy lunch overlooking the ocean and lighthouse. After lunch, we travel to Nelson to board our scenic cruise on the Glenelg River. During the cruise we enjoy afternoon tea. Dinner tonight in the Motel restaurant.
Day 4 / Monday 10 June: Mount Gambier to Portland on the Shipwreck Coast (BLD)
Today after breakfast we tour South towards an area once known as the notorious Shipwreck Coast. A number of lighthouses were erected along this coastline to help prevent whaling ships crashing into the rocks at night during wild weather. At Nelson, the original Nelson Lighthouse can be seen. We continue on to the township of Portland, which is regarded as the birthplace of Victoria, as the Henty Brothers established the first permanent white settlement here in 1834. During our visit here we enjoy a fascinating tram ride which makes stops at historic locations during its voyage. A lunch is provided near the waterfront and a visit to the wonderful Portland Maritime Museum is a great experience which includes the 1858 Portland lifeboat, which was famous for it’s roll in the Admella rescue in 1859. It is one of the oldest remaining lifeboats which remains untouched and unrestored in perfect condition. Later we tour back to Mount Gambier via the Princes Highway. Dinner & overnight Mt Gambier.
Day 5 / Tuesday 11 June: Mount Gambier to Adelaide via Robe and the Coorong (BL)
After breakfast today we begin a tour along one of Australia’s most beautiful and pristine coastlines. We travel to Millicent before turning to the coast to Beachport, then continuing to Robe. Historic Robe is one of South Australia’s most popular fishing townships well known for its quality crayfish. We visit the unique Transmutation Factory which transforms plastic bread tags into beautiful creations. This amazing workshop helps reduce landfill by recycling plastics into openly reusable products. Later we enjoy lunch at the Robe Hotel.
