After our delicious, freshly baked pasty for lunch, we continue to Jamestown then Melrose (called Mount Remarkable), once the oldest town in the Flinders. We continue to Port Augusta before checking into our quality accommodation at the Standpipe Golf Motor Inn where we stay for our entire holiday. Today, we set off for a wonderful tour to enjoy highlights of the magnificent Flinders Ranges. We begin our leisurely journey which takes us North to the little town of Hawker. Here we visit the well-known Jeff Morgan gallery. The artist is acclaimed all over the world and his works depict the awesome beauty of this timeless land. A special feature at the gallery is the famous Wilpena Panorama, a huge mural depicting the entire landscape seen below from St Mary’s peak, the highest peak in the Flinders Ranges. We continue travelling through the Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park to Blinman. Blinman is the sole surveying township from the 19th century, the town was a thriving copper mining centre. We enjoy lunch at the Old Blinman Hotel and later experience a unique, award winning Mine tour. The tour allows visitors to step back in time and experience life as it was back in the 1860s complete with sounds and mining through an innovative sound system. Later, we travel to Parachilna and Bunyeroo enjoying the colours and stunning rock formations of this timeless land before retuning back to our accommodation for dinner and our overnight.
After breakfast at our motel, we tour to Quorn which was established as a Railway Town on the Great Northern Railway in 1878. Part of the original rail line which was built to travel through the Pichi Richi pass has been reopened as a tourist journey between Quorn and Woolshed Flat. We board the train in Quorn at 10.30am for our trip today and return from Woolshed Flat at 1.00pm (please note due to fire restrictions at this time of year the passenger carriages may be hauled by a diesel motor). After time for lunch in Quorn, we tour back to Port Augusta to the award-winning Wadlata Centre. At Wadlata you are able to take a tour through the “Tunnel of Time”, which will give you an insight into the early days of the area and the laying of the first railway line to Alice Springs from Peterborough. We also visit the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens for a guided tour featuring plants that can survive the harsh Australian desert conditions in the outback. Please note: due to seasonal availability, train routing may differ between Quorn to Woolshed Flat, or Port Augusta to Quorn and return. After dinner tonight, we enjoy a special feature which begins with a Curly Cue countdown at sunset, followed by an amazing sound and light show and stunning silo art. The show also features the stories and histories of the area and is held under the night sky in Quorn. We return to our accommodation in Port Augusta.
After breakfast, we begin our journey south from Port Augusta to Adelaide.
We stop at Port Broughton, a little town noted for its fishing boats and deep-sea prawns. After time for lunch, we continue travelling to Brute to Port Wakefield back to Adelaide arriving around 4.00pm.
