After breakfast, we set off into the Tirari Desert to discover an amazing & mysterious group of hills & sandstone.
This truly amazing sight features a unique mix of beautiful colours which have taken over 80 million years to create. Bright sunlight brings out vivid colours such as ochre yellow, oxide red & deep rich brown which contrasts with crisp whites & jet blacks. We tour into an area near Mount Barry Cattle Station and the ‘Moon’ Plains. This area has been used by Australian film makers for many feature films, due to the beauty and clear sky’s here.
Later, we visit the fascinating Breakaways range, a conservation park that covers almost 15,000 hectares of majestic arid scenery. The area is home to almost 60 native flora species including acacias, mallee and eremophilia. It is also home to a variety of wildlife, including red kangaroos, euro, echidna, numerous bird species and the fat-tailed dunnart. Tonight, enjoy a drink in the bar before enjoying a delicious indoor BBQ meal at Umberto’s Restaurant at our hotel.
After a delicious breakfast at our hotel, we begin a fascinating tour of Coober Pedy’s unique highlights. As well as being world-famous as the location of some of the world’s most brilliant opal discoveries, Coober Pedy is unique due to its lunar like landscape and its ‘dugouts’. Due to the intense heat on many of the summer days, most of the population live underground which provides the occupants with relief from the heat. We visit St Peter & Paul’s Underground Church, a spectacular Serbian Orthodox excavation as well as an underground home before stopping at the award-winning Umoona Mine & Museum. The mine gives visitors a wonderful insight into the origins and working of an underground opal mine.
Later, we set off travelling south along the Stuart Highway to Port Augusta for our overnight stay. This evening, we enjoy a delicious 3 course dinner at our hotel.
❱ 1 night: Standpipe Motor Inn

Later, we continue to the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden.
Established in 1993, the Botanic Garden researches, conserves & promotes the wider appreciation of Australia’s arid zone flora whilst offering spectacular views to the ancient Flinders Ranges. The lands are home to thousands of highly evolved plant communities that are specially adapted to thrive in an environment where temperatures are extreme and drought can last for decades.
